Solidarity action in Berlin (Germany)

Posted by ticker | 12 Jul, 2008

On 12 July at 17:00 a demonstration was held in front of the Japanese Embassy in Berlin to protest against police violence and arrests during the Japanese G8 Summit. A number of "Kamikaze" paper airplanes dutifully served their one-time mission by flying over the Embassy fence to deliver the clear message onto Japanese soil (all Embassies are considered soveriegn land) that we demand immediate release of all those imprisoned during the G8 protests.
Banners were also there to say "Send Prisons to Hell! Freedom for Political Prisons", and demading an end also to German's repressive paragraph 129a "Anti-Terrorist" law. Another banner called for an end to repression in Japan.
The Japanese police have used very strange laws such as "illegally registered as living with parents" or "mobile phone registered under different name than person in possesion of phone" in order to imprison people for up to 23 days. People are urged to put pressure on Japan by calling their national Japanese Embassy to demand the release of all G8 related prisoners.  (More)

Three of our friends were unjustly arrested at the demonstration against the G8 summit on 5th July 2008. One of the arrested (vid,ja) is an indymedia activist who is organizing sound actions and a member of the G8 Media Network. The police used overwhelming violence. For instance, they stopped the sound truck forcefully, three [1] [2] [3] policemen broke the truck window with their clubs, (vid,ja) and they viciously dragged out the driver. This situation was exposed as Japanese police brutality once again, reported by independent media.  (More)

Solidarity Demonstration in Salzwedel/Germany

Posted by activist | 10 Jul, 2008

At 6 pm on the 9th of July 30 people assembled in the german town Salzwedel (21.000 inhabitants) in a spontaneous solidarity demonstration with activists facing severe police repression for their protest against the ongoing G8 summit in Japan. The demonstration which was fairly black with some pink spots - the front banner being held by activists with bandannas pulled up -  moved through the centre of the town and informed passers-by about the events in Japan via numerous banners and speeches held through a megaphone. After a while (mostly motorised) police tried to escort the demonstration but were repeatedly shaken off. Apart from trying to take notes of all slogans on the banners (an increasingly common practice clearly aimed at intimidating attendees) and taking photos, the police didn't escalate the situation further so that the activists were able to finish the demonstration as planned and end it peacefully.  (More)

No! G8 Action in Croydon, UK

5th July 2008. London Fete held an anti-G8 solidarity action in Croydon, London. They focused on border control and immigration. Globalisation has created huge movements of people, however, only those deemed worthy under the eyes of the capitalist state find it easy to settle in their country of choice. For the poor and vulnerable freedom of movement is severely restricted. Rich nations, like those within the G8, abhor those who cannot bring further wealth into the capitalist economy. The poor and vulnerable who dare try and seek a better life are often treated no better than dogs. And they soon discover that a tin of baked beans are bestowed more rights to enter a country than themselves. No Nations, No Borders, No G8!

Gathering point: 10:30 AM Victoria Park

March to Japanese Consulate: 11:00 AM Peaceful event. Child friendly. Bring banners, placards, costumes, noise-makers!

From July 5th to 9th, at Lake Toya in northern Japan, leaders of Britain, Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Russia and the United States will meet behind closed doors and protected by the police and military, to discuss soaring food and oil prices, climate change and African development. The major powers of the G8 summit ignore justice, human rights and social security. Instead, they push for neoliberal policies which prioritize economic efficiency. These countries also strengthen military rule in the world under the guise of anti-terrorism. On July 4th and 5th, protests will be happening around the world to say NO to the world's most powerful countries deciding on policies of global apartheid. We welcome the opportunity to collaborate in actions with people who tackle issues of poverty, labor, discrimination, war, violence, gender inequality, social exclusion, environmental destruction, abuse of human rights, food safety and agriculture.  (More)

Dissent! Action Paris

Posted by activist | 5 Jul, 2008

Following the International Day of Action against G8 organised by No G8 Action Japan, Dissent held an autonomous demonstration in front of the Asiatic entry of the Lafayette Galeries during the summer rebate period as the Japan is actually hosting the 2008 G8 Summit. We distributed texts in French and in Japanese and pulled out a bilingual banner declaring « Stop G8. The World Is Not For Sale ».

This demonstration was part of an anti-consumerism struggle as consumerism is the very basis of the capitalistic system. A tool for controling people (we consume thus we exist), and mainly responsible for the mass destruction of our natural ressources.

« Work, Consume and Die », this is the lifestyle they are offering us...

In Japan, as in many other places in the world, the resistance is growing in spite of the repression trying to shut us up.

This action was also in solidarity with our japanese comrades arrested on the 10th June to prevent them from organising the contestation against G8 and as well with our italian comrades awaiting justice for the Bolzaneto story (Genoa, G8 2001) where many G8 activists were tortured.

Join us protesting in Genoa July 18th to 22nd during the Bolzenato trial and in commemoration of Carlo Guliani, Anti-G8 militant killed by the police in 2001 during the protests in Genoa.

Press release July 5th

  • 3 anti-g8 protesters, Reuters journalist arrested today in Japan

On the eve of the 2008 G8 Summit, thousands took to the streets of Sapporo, Japan, today to call for an end to the undemocratic policy-making and wars of G8 member states. The protest, which was a coalition effort of NGOs, trade unions, leftist organizations, anti-authoritarian organizers, and independent activists, culminated in the arrest of three protesters and a Reuters photographer.

“The rally today illustrated both the powerful global justice movement underway in Japan and worldwide, and the police repression that grassroots activists face,” said David Solnit, a US activist. “People are realizing that the G8 claims to be a force against hunger, poverty, and climate change, yet with each meeting, they only institute policies that perpetuate these things – “aid” packages that trap poor countries into debt, fossil fuel-based energy systems that create climate change, and war.”

Anti-G8 Solidarity Action in Singapore

Posted by ticker | 5 Jul, 2008

Today is the 5th of July, International Day of Action Against the G8. In solidarity with the planned mass demonstration in Sapporo and anti-G8 activists worldwide, we held a brief protest outside the Japanese Embassy in Singapore. As we gathered outside the gate, we were met with hostile reception from the security guard on duty, who threatened to call the police if we did not leave immediately. Undeterred, we unfurled our banner and took pictures.

Later, when we asked to hand a collective letter to the Japanese ambassador, the guard refused to cooperate. We were also stopped from depositing the letter in the mailbox. One of us attempted to reason with guard but he would not listen. In the end, we had to leave without submitting the letter. We will try again on Monday.

The embassy must have been put on alert during the G8 summit, for the guard appeared to have anticipated our actions. He was probably told to refer anything peculiar to the police. Here, we lament the fact that demonstrations are relatively uncommon and risky in Singapore. Repressive laws require police approval for public gatherings of 4 or more people. These laws are selectively enforced and used to quell dissent.

Berlin says G8 Funsai! (Smash G8!)

In front of the Japanese Embassy in Berlin, Germany, a small demonstration of 40 people took place to send a message of solidarity to our friends and comrades in Japan. Even in the rain, we met to send a clear message that we think the G8 is more clearly a part of the problem, and not a solution to such issues as Climate Change or poverty in Africa. A number of speeches were read, also highlighting the massive recent repression in Japan against anti-G8 activists. In Berlin the Japanese Embassy is directly next to the Italian Embassy, so speeches were also made about the problem of state violence at the G8 in 2001, and about the coming verdicts against a large number of police who have been rightly accused of abuse of power and violence towards protesters.
